Johan honoured me with a request to write a short introduction to his magnum opus on the life and career of a pilot in the South African Air Force. I use the term magnum opus deliberately, for Johan covers such a wide range of interesting topics in the world of aviation that it should be read by many more aviation buffs than his close family.
Lieutenant General Jan van Loggerenberg SSAS SD SOE ORB (Retired Chief of the South African Air Force)
Johan Nieuwoudt shares his flying experiences in the South African Air Force, starting with his passion for aircraft as a school boy and ending some three decades later after a truly exciting career in the wonderful world of military aviation, and shares the privilege of having been part of the fascinating world of flying. There is something truly magical about one’s first solo flight on a Harvard, and all the first solo flights that would follow on more advanced aircraft. And there is especially the lasting memory of the first flight in the Buccaneer.
But the excitement of flying did not end with his time on Buccaneers. It covered as wide a range of different types of aircraft as any pilot could wish for. His writing on a Mach 2 run in a Mirage F1 as fascinating and exciting as any pilot could wish for. And so, it all ended for him in early retirement in his mid-forties, and the pleasure of being able to look back with gratitude on a career of serving with comrades and friends.
